So if you followed me on instagram, you should be aware that I recently covered my old pair of dr martens with glitter! I wasn't wearing that pair of shoes much lately since the leather was scuffed and it's really old. So I was thinking about giving it a whole new look!
This probably isn't a tutorial but more of my documentation of doing the shoes.
Oh and, sorry for the shitty pictures, was doing it in my room and had no choice but to use the flash that made all the pictures hideous.
Materials:
1. Old pair of shoes
For best results, do it with a pair of sturdy shoes. Preferably leather or pu leather, because if you were to use canvas shoes or ballet flats, the glitter might crack over time because they its material tends to bend a lot.
2. Loose glitter, lots of glitter.
Don't buy them from spotlight or art friend. I got them for Popular near my place. Cheaper, and has a wide range of colours!
3. Mod podge.
Mod podge is actually just permanent white glue. So if you have white glue at home, you can use it too! Just make sure it isn't those for school or kids because those can be washed off, you should get something permanent instead. I got mine from art friend (the outlets at ngee ann city and bras basah both have it).
4. A brush or foam applicator.
5. Waterproof fixative
It's good if you spray the shoes with a layer of waterproof fixative, considering Singapore's weather. I haven't gotten this myself because it's pretty costly. You can find the Krylon fixatives at art friend, just look for the moisture proof ones, it should cost around $10-$11 per can.
Before you start, using masking tape (I used clear tape since I ran out of masking tape) tape up the areas that you're not covering. Like the shoelace eyelets, the soles, etc. You might want to clean your shoes first, I cleaned my dr martens with some leather cleaning spray before I went ahead painting the glitter on.
Pour some mod podge into a cup or container, then add in the glitter. I added in very little glitter because I was afraid it wouldn't dry. But it dries pretty quickly so I guess it's safe to add more glitter. The more glitter you add, the less layers you have to paint. I painted around 10 layers I think?
Don't go too thick, just glaze a thin layer and leave it to dry. If possible, put it in front of a fan. Wait for around 20 to 30 minutes before glazing on the next layer.
This was after 3 or 4 layers.
After your final layer, remember to glaze a coat of mod podge (without the glitter, just mod podge itself) as the "protective layer". This way the loose glitter bits will not shed, not at all!
And voila! You can rock your glitter kicks!
As you can see from the close up, it isn't covered completely. That's probably because I didn't add enough glitter and I was too lazy to continue.
I hope this helps... but if it doesn't I'm sorry hahahaha.
